Club news

'Magic Mike' strikes again

Old fold Manor legend Mike Ready was once again doing our club proud in his latest Senior Tournament, held at Aberdovey GC. Mike produced two great rounds of golf to finish second, just one shot off playing partner Keith Davies.

Mike came into the Pro Shop after his last round to say thanks to the pro staff who have helped him re-discover some great form. As always it was a pleasure to help Mike.

Return of the Gardner

Over the weekend, a few of you may have noticed something rather strange happened. Well known member Paul Gardner was walking around the club with a MASSIVE smile on his face…

But what was Paul so happy about?

Maybe it had something to do with his golf performance? Paul came to have a lesson with Professional Glen Portelli last week. Paul was in a bad way and even his own daughter said that he was swinging like “an old man”. After going on the course and making some changes to his swing, Paul immediately started to hit the ball a bit further and more consistently. It was great to see him turning his body properly again.

Paul then put the lesson to test and produced a superb round of golf with a gross 75! Well done Paul, it’s great to see a top bloke enjoy his golf again. Keep it up!

Hadley Wood Pro-Am

OFM professionals Glen and Jack both played in the popular annual Hadley Wood Pro-AM. The day consisted of around 54 teams over 18 holes with some great prizes up for grabs. Glen managed a respectable round of level par 72 which left him in a T3rd position. Jack had a moment to remember as he picked up the longest drive prize. Does this mean he is now the longest player at OFM?

Bunker Tips from our Pro team

Around this time of year as the weather gets warmer, it's easy for sand to be blown around in bunkers. Which can leave some areas of the bunker with no sand and cause some grief when playing out of them. Lucky for you, we have come up with three tips to help you avoid dropping shots:

- Dig your feet it - this will give you a rough idea of how much sand there really is

- DO NOT open the clubface - opening the clubface will expose the bounce on the sole. Which will cause the club to bounce off the hard ground with the ball flying out over the green. Try and keep the clubface square at address, similar to how you would play a pitch shot

- Allow for the ball to roll more - as there is less sand, the ball will have less spin when landing on the green, so make sure you allow for more roll

The term 'gapping' is commonly used to refer to the yardage distance between each of the wedges in your bag. We want to break this thought process and get you to think about gapping for your entire set, because any unequal gaps between clubs will have a detrimental impact on your game.

Gapping at the top end

One part of your set that needs careful consideration is how you transition from your irons into your woods. Lots of golfers struggle to hit their longer irons and instead opt for a replacement hybrid or driving iron, which can lead to large gaps between clubs if you're not careful.
